Newsletter - Week 7 - Term 1

Kowhai News Term 1, Week 7
Thank you to all the families who attended the Learning Conferences this week. We have been so impressed with the way the children talked about their learning and the positive responses from parents to their child’s presentation.

Mathletics and Reading Eggs : We have started setting homework tasks for children to work through in Mathletics. We will set new tasks on Fridays and the children will have to complete the tasks before they can do other activities. We do not set a time for doing Mathletics or Reading Eggs as homework but 10-15 minutes per night will make a difference. You may find that your child enjoys learning through these programs and may want to do more. An alternative is to do Reading Eggs one night and Mathletics the next.

We have noticed each year that the children who use Mathletics regularly make big gains in their basic facts knowledge and are better prepared to learn and practise new strategies because their basic facts are well established. Live Maths is particularly excellent for improving speed and accuracy.

The response to Reading Eggs has been very positive and children are enjoying working through the activities. Some children have been retested this week and will be working in Reading Eggspress from now on.

We have several children in our Kowhai team who have epipens due to allergies – PLEASE ensure that you check that your child’s lunch does not contain ANY NUTS (including peanuts, cashews and almonds). Many snack bars contain nuts so please read the ingredients and if they contain any nuts DO NOT put them in lunchboxes. We want to minimise the risk to these children of having a severe reaction at school.

We are desperately short of parent help in our learning spaces and at library times – if you can help regularly please put your name of the sheet in the classroom. We appreciate any time that parents can give and it makes a huge difference when we have regular helpers to read with the children and help with the day-to-day routines such as putting reading books away.

Kowhai Trip : Next week we are visiting Corbans Art Centre, on Wednesday 29 March for the Pacifica Experience. So far we have had one parent let us know they will come which may mean that the trip will have to be cancelled as we don’t have enough parent helpers. On any school trip we have to have a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children which means we need another seven parents to help please. Corbans is a great experience and our Year 2s and the parents really enjoyed it last year.

If you are interested in attending as a parent help please let us know asap.

Regards Lucinda, Elaine and Sarah
